Starting from Loch Lomond and extending to Fort William, the Argyll Coastal Route traverses some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes.

The Peloponnese offers an idyllic road trip destination, combining ancient history, beautiful landscapes, and charming villages. We travelled in a motorhome, allowing us to explore at our own pace, discovering hidden gems along the way.
This route takes you through picturesque coastal towns, rugged mountain ranges, and serene beaches, each offering unique experiences and spectacular views.
Travelling during the off-peak months of autumn or winter allows for a more peaceful exploration, avoiding the summer crowds and enjoying mild, pleasant weather.

- Olympia: Visit the ancient ruins, including the Temple of Zeus, the Olympic Stadium, and the Olympia Museum. Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games and a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering a profound connection to ancient history.

9. North Coast 500, Scotland
Distance: About 640 miles (1030 km) | Suggested Travel Time: 1 – 2 weeks
The North Coast 500 (NC500) is Scotland’s ultimate road trip, taking you through the rugged and remote landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Starting and ending in Inverness, this route showcases the best of Scotland’s coastal scenery, historic sites, and quaint villages.
The NC500 promises an unforgettable adventure with breathtaking views around every corner. But beware – it is particularly busy in the summer months!
Highlights
- Inverness: Begin your journey in the capital of the Highlands. Explore nearby Urquhart Castle, keep an eye out for the Lochness monster, and, more likely, watch dolphins playing at Chanonry Point. Don’t miss the nearby Culloden Battlefield, a significant site in Scottish history.

- Duncansby Stacks: Near John o’ Groats, these impressive sea stacks are a must-see. A short walk from Duncansby Head leads you to breathtaking views of these towering rock formations.
- Smoo Cave: Located in Durness, this dramatic sea cave features a cascading waterfall. You can explore the cave on foot or take a guided boat tour for a closer look.
- Handa Island: If you are travelling in May, June or July, visit Handa Island puffins and cacophony of other seabirds at this remote protected Nature Reserve.
- Invererewe Gardens: If you love exploring gardens, stop at this spectacular garden with masses of rhodendrons, azaleas, and gorgeous coastal views.
We travelled around the whole route in May, and it wasn’t too busy but we were travelling by car, which we would suggest is the best way to travel this route as many car parks and roads weren’t suitable for large campers, let alone motorhomes.
Also, wild camping is illegal and there are limited camper and motorhome spots, so a car gives you much more scope for exploring off the beaten path.

10. The Amalfi Coast Drive, Italy
Distance: About 32 km | Suggested Travel Time: Allow at least a full day
The Amalfi Coast Drive, known for its breathtaking views and precarious positioning along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, offers a thrilling mix of natural beauty and quaint village life.
This route is famous for its narrow, winding roads that offer stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, steep cliffs, and lush mountainsides.
Highlights
- Positano: Often the first stop on this drive, Positano is famed for its picturesque stacked houses painted in warm pastel colours and beautiful pebble beaches. The town is also known for its chic boutiques and vibrant dining scene.
- Amalfi: The historic town of Amalfi offers a beautiful central piazza dominated by the striking Amalfi Cathedral. The town’s narrow streets are filled with restaurants and shops, and its waterfront provides a scenic relaxing spot.
- Furore: Less crowded than Positano and Amalfi, Furore’s famous fjord is a hidden gem along the coast.
- Sorrento: Though not part of the Amalfi Coast proper, many drives start or end here. Sorrento is perched atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas and is known for its lemon groves and sweeping water views.
Travel Tips
- Driving Caution: The road is narrow, winding, and often busy. Drivers should be comfortable handling challenging driving conditions.
- Parking: Parking can be scarce and expensive in the popular towns. It’s wise to check if your hotel offers parking and consider using public transport like buses and ferries to move between towns.
- Best Time to Visit: The Amalfi Coast is most enjoyable in the late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). Summer months are busiest when the towns and roads can be extremely crowded.

11. Alsace Wine Route, France
Distance: 50 km | Suggested Travel Time: 2-3 days
The Alsace Wine Route is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, featuring medieval towns and extensive vineyards that stretch along the eastern foothills of the Vosges Mountains.
This Europe road trip route is one of the prettiest as well as being rich in viticultural and cultural heritage.
Highlights
- Colmar: Start your adventure in the so-called capital of Alsatian wine. Explore its enchanting old town and vibrant wine bars.
- Eguisheim: Just a short drive from Colmar, this village is famed for its floral displays, half-timbered houses, and the concentric layout around a medieval castle.

You don’t miss out, though, as you still pass by Neuschwanstein Castle, the renowned “showstopper” of the Romantic Road.
This suggested route covers the mystical Black Forest, the pristine Lake Königssee, and the historic town of Berchtesgaden. With fewer tourists, each stop provides a serene backdrop to enjoy Germany’s natural landscapes and rich culture at a relaxed pace.

- The Black Forest: Famous for its dense woodlands, traditional cuckoo clocks, and the original Black Forest Gateau. Explore the hiking trails or relax in quaint towns like Triberg and pretty Sasbachwalden.

14. Furka Pass, Switzerland
Distance: 70 km (between Andermatt and Brig) | Estimated Travel Time: 1.5 -2 hours (without stops)
Note: Normally opens in June and closes in October. Check the Furka Pass website for road conditions and opening times.
The Furka Pass is one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain passes, offering a spectacular drive through the Swiss Alps.
We drove the Furka Pass in a 7.5-metre motorhome, and it was pretty hair-raising, to say the least! especially when a huge coach was coming in the opposite direction.
Less crowded than some famous tourist routes, this route provides an alternative to over-tourism while still delivering breathtaking views and thrilling driving experiences.
The Furka Pass is best known for its dramatic switchbacks, stunning vistas, and the historic Hotel Belvédère, which overlooks the Rhone Glacier.
Combining this with a visit to Bettmeralp, a car-free village with stunning views and on the doorstep of the Aletch Glacier, makes for an unforgettable Swiss road trip experience.

- Andermatt: Begin your journey in this charming alpine village, known for its traditional Swiss architecture and beautiful surroundings.
- Rhone Glacier: Stop at the historic Hotel Belvédère and take a short walk to the Rhone Glacier, where you can visit the ice grotto carved into the glacier.
